DAVID WISEHART: How do you
develop and differentiate your
characters?
MICKI PELUSO: This is a
non-fiction factual story, so the
characters and events were
simply written from my own
point of view. Had other
members of the family written
the book, each version would
have been different. I did use
certain devices to keep the
book pacing fast and grabbing
the interest of my readers. I
told the story from the ICU
(Intensive Care Unit) of the
hospital in short spurts, then
flashed back and forth from the
beginning of the story in 1959
to it's ending in 1983.
DAVID WISEHART: Who do you
imagine is your ideal reader?
MICKI PELUSO: My ideal
readership, I had imagined,
would be ordinary mothers and
women like me, who had loved
and lost a child. I was amazed
and surprised to find that the
book also attracted men and
boys from all walks of life and
ages from fifteen to eighty-six.
DAVID WISEHART: What was
your journey as a writer?
MICKI PELUSO: I published a
short story of this memoir,
resulting in 25 years of writing
essays, commentary, and slice
of life for three major
newspapers, and staff writer
for the Staten Island Register.
I've published humor, horror,
and paranormal fiction in
e-zines, print magazines, and
contests, and am currently
writing a children's story.
Heartbeats...Slices of Life, a
collection of comedic essays,
short fiction and non-fiction
stories, will be released in
early 2011.
DAVID WISEHART: What authors
most inspire you?
MICKI PELUSO: I am an avid read
of all genres, most inspired by
the older, great writers of the
past, such as Erma Bombeck,
Margaret Atwood, Danielle
Steele, Jane Auel, and James
Mitchner. I like contemporary
writers such as Nora Roberts,
James Patterson, Debbie
Macomber, Janet Evanovich and
Diana Gabaldon.
DAVID WISEHART: How did you
create your cover?
My striking cover was designed
by Sean Dickey, who worked for
my publisher. I told him of the
part the whippoorwill played in
my family's lives and he came up
with a hauntingly beautiful
cover—a wonderful tribute to the
book.
DAVID WISEHART: How have you
marketed and promoted your work?
MICKI PELUSO: I am fortunate to
have a publisher who excels in
marketing and teaches her
authors her expertise. It takes
hard work and skill to market and
I do book signings at bookstores
and market heavily online, but my
greatest success lies in reaching
people through community
events and groups like the Red
Hatter's Club, The New York and
Teacher's Association), and
being interviewed on my local
cable TV. I've had newspapers in
cable TV. I've had newspapers in
every town in which we lived
every town in which we lived
print either a "local resident
makes good" story and/or book
reviews.
DAVID WISEHART: Why publish on
Kindle?
MICKI PELUSO: Kindle is the
wave of the future, a prototype
predicted years ago as the That
day is fast approaching. It's an
accessible way to read while
subways, and is an attractive,
slim, book-like commodity that
also allows the reader to
browse through newspapers,
do crosswords, and many other
activities all under one very
user-friendly electronic book.
DAVID WISEHART: What advice
would you give to a first-time author
MICKI PELUSO: My advice to a
first-time author would be to
definitely consider Kindle as a
major marketing target. Kindle
is an affordable way to enjoy
reading of all types and for the
new writer, it's easily attainable
for readers. The books are
much cheaper than buying
conventional book—this is
huge for a writer just starting
out and unknown by the
reading community. Many
readers may not be willing to
invest in a book by an untried
writer, but might consider
Kindle's enticing lower prices.
DAVID WISEHART: Thanks, and
best of luck with your book.
Micki Peluso, author of ...And the Whippoorwill Sang, discusses her
memoir, her journey as a writer, and self-publishing on Kindle.
DAVID WISEHART: What can you tell us about ...And the Whippoorwill
Sang?
MICKI PELUSO:
The elusive whippoorwill swoops down the mountains. Through night
into dawn it's song mourns summer's loss— as I cry mine. ...And the
Whipporwill Sang, a funny, poignant family memoir, opens with
eloping teenagers, Micki and Butch, in a bizarre double wedding
ceremony with Micki’s mother.
